Does My Home Need Rewiring?

Whether you have just bought a new home or have lived in your current home for years, it can be difficult to tell whether or not the electrics are working as well and as safely as they should be. Ensuring that your electrics are in good condition is vital as it can cause serious problems, such as trips, failures and even fires, if the electrics are in a bad enough condition.

If you’re unsure about whether your home electrics may need a rewire, take a look at a few of our top signs that you may need to take action:

Your home is more than 30 years old

If your home is over 30 years old and still has all of the original electrics then there is a very good chance that this would need a rewire.

Over the years, technology has improved and with that, the way that we wire homes is very different. Action may need to be taken to bring it up to today’s safety standards. Nowadays we use copper wiring with a PVC coating for all modern electrics whereas in the past, aluminium wiring was used.

Furthermore if your home does have the original electrics, the wiring around the home could be damaged and coating around the cables worn away which can lead to dangerous situations.

Circuit breakers trip regularly

Circuit breakers are there as a safety net to prevent electrical fires. When a circuit breaker trips it cuts off the electrical flow to a circuit because it has exceeded the number of amps that it can handle.

If this is a regular occurence in your home, this could be a sign that the electrical system is wearing out and cannot handle the amount of electricity that is flowing through it. This is a good indication that your home needs rewiring.

You are getting slight shocks

If you are experiencing slight shocks or tingles when you are near electrical outlets or when plugging in appliances, this is a surefire sign that something is wrong. This can be very dangerous and if you are experiencing shocks, no matter how big or small, call an electrician immediately.

Lights flicker throughout your home

Lights flickering in your home could mean nothing, and could be the result of a bulb not being screwed in properly or a bulb that simply needs changing. However, if this is something that occurs frequently and throughout the home this could be a sign of faulty or loose wiring and electrics that needs to be checked out.

Are you getting an extension or remodelling your home?

If you are planning an extension or remodelling of your home, you may need to get part or all of your electrics rewired in order to comply with building regulations. If your original wiring is not up to current standards, then this may mean that it needs to be updated in order to safely cope with the new electrical installations.

Not sure if your home needs rewiring?

If you are still not sure if you need to rewire your home, it is always suggested that your get your wiring and electrics periodically serviced to ensure everything is running correctly.
