Cooper Weston have been the contractors at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home since 2013. In early 2018, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home commissioned Cooper Weston to an area of their existing cattery. Once completed, the room would house three new purpose built cat pens and two chill out areas for their feline residents.
Design and build the electrical installation of five climate controlled pens, with waterproof electrical sockets which can withstand regular washing and disinfection.
Be mindful of the animals around the site when completing electrical work. This included early starts to not disturb members of the public, and reducing noise as much as possible so that the cats residing in the next block were not upset or stressed out.
Cooper Weston worked with two other contractors who built the glass enclosures and equipment for each of the cat pens. Stuart Cooper of Cooper Weston designed the electrical installation which included rewiring and repurposing an existing building in under two weeks.
Core works completed
The level of care that Battersea Dogs & Cats Home provides to animals can, at times, require specialist equipment. The new cattery included five temperature controlled pens, cat bed heaters, and mains controlled Feliway systems to help calm the cats during their stay.
The building was completely rewired with the old electrical supply disconnected. Two new fuse boards were installed; one for the air conditioning units and another for the new power and lighting. In addition to this, new sockets, lighting systems and heated cat beds were installed.
Each pen’s air conditioning is independently controlled to accommodate the needs of each cat in care. These are adjusted via remote controls for each unit. Furthermore, outdoor sockets were installed to weatherproof the electrical supply for cleaning purposes.
A large fan was fitted within the glass of one of the pens which required specialist knowledge and controlled installation to ensure the glass remained intact.
Working alongside the resident cats at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home required careful planning as to not disturb the animals.
Cooper Weston co-owner Stuart Cooper states, “We are honoured to have continued involvement with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, who work relentlessly to accommodate the needs of over 7,000 animals a year.
Our team are always on hand to ensure the electrics of the site are capable of delivering the best solutions for the site, from offices to catteries and everything in between.
This particular job was personal to me, as I designed the electrical installation, and I am pleased that it will help cats who need extra TLC reside in a calm, climate controlled environment with their own heated bed!”
